What’s Nutellino?

By: Silvana Lanzetta

I can’t quite pinpoint the exact moment I had my first taste of Nutella liqueur. It feels like it wasn’t too long ago, definitely before I became a mum. I vividly recall a lazy Easter afternoon spent in Italy, surrounded by family and feasting on a sumptuous lunch. As I lounged on a swing seat, barely able to keep my eyes open, someone slipped a small glass of chocolate heaven into my hand. One sip, and I was hooked. I’ve always had a soft spot for Nutella, but combining it with a splash of alcohol? That’s next-level bliss. I begged my aunt for the recipe, and she graciously shared it with me. It took me a while to recreate it myself, mainly because finding 95% food-grade alcohol outside of Italy was like searching for a needle in a haystack. I experimented with vodka in the meantime, and it turned out pretty decent. But when I finally managed to get my hands on a bottle of 90% alcohol, let me tell you, it was a game-changer! The flavour explosion was out of this world. Everyone who’s tried it agrees—Nutella liqueur, or Nutellino as we call it in Italy, is an absolute must-try. It’s incredibly simple and quick to whip up, but trust me, it gets even better with a bit of ageing. Aim for at least 7 days if you can resist the temptation. Plus, it makes for a fabulous homemade gift for your nearest and dearest.

How to serve Nutella liqueur

Nutella liqueur is a versatile ingredient that can be enjoyed in various ways, whether sipped neat, mixed into cocktails, or drizzled over desserts.

From Spread to Spirit: The Evolution of Nutella Liqueur

The evolution from the cherished Nutella to the creation of a liqueur was a natural progression. While the precise origins of Nutella liqueur remain shrouded in mystery, its inception undoubtedly represents a stroke of brilliance. This unique artisanal liqueur, celebrated for its low alcohol content and harmoniously balanced sweetness, firmly establishes itself as a culinary masterpiece. From its humble beginnings in Turin, where Pietro Ferrero conceived the idea of Nutella in 1925, to its modern-day status as a beloved household staple, the journey has been one of innovation and delight. Inspired by the success of the iconic spread, the idea to transform it into a liqueur emerged, captivating the taste buds of enthusiasts worldwide. With each sip, Nutella liqueur invites us to indulge in the rich flavours and nostalgia of our favourite childhood treat, elevating the experience to new heights of culinary delight.

Core ingredients for Homemade Nutella Liqueur

Nutellino typically boasts an ABV of around 12%. If you’re using 95% grain alcohol, 125ml of it will hit the mark perfectly. However, if you’re unable to find 95% alcohol, don’t worry! Check out the table below for guidance on achieving a similar ABV using other spirits.

– Vodka: Known for its neutral taste, vodka is a versatile spirit that can easily blend with other ingredients without overpowering them. It’s a popular choice for cocktails and mixed drinks due to its clean and smooth profile.

– Brandy: Brandy is a spirit distilled from wine or fermented fruit juice, such as grapes, apples, or pears. It often carries fruity and rich flavours, with notes of caramel, vanilla, and oak depending on the ageing process and type of fruit used.

– Whiskey: Whiskey is a distilled alcoholic beverage made from fermented grain mash, which may include barley, corn, rye, or wheat. It’s typically aged in wooden barrels, imparting complex flavours such as caramel, spice, smoke, and oak.

– Rum: Rum is a spirit made from sugarcane juice or molasses and is often associated with tropical regions. It can vary widely in flavour, ranging from light and floral to rich and robust, depending on factors such as aging, distillation methods, and origin.

Each spirit can offer a distinct character to the Nutella liqueur, enhancing its taste and adding depth to the final product.

Nutella isn’t the only chocolate spread you can use to whip up this liqueur. Any chocolate cream will work wonders! Going vegan? Just pick a vegan hazelnut spread (or any other nut-based spread, or even one without nuts) or get inventive and whip up your own Nutella. The options are limitless!

The wonderful thing about this liqueur is that it’s delicious even without adding extra sugar. Nutella itself is usually quite sweet, so if you prefer a more subtle sweetness, you can skip the sugar altogether.

However, if you have a sweet tooth like me, adding a couple of tablespoons of sugar will take the Nutella liqueur to a whole new level of deliciousness.

Feel free to use honey if you fancy, but avoid artificial sweeteners—they can give the liqueur a funky taste.

Dairy and substitutes

Let’s talk about that thick cream that adds a luxurious touch to Nutellino! This creaminess is what gives our liqueur its velvety texture and indulgent flavour. It’s like the icing on the cake, making every sip feel like a treat. When it’s folded into the Nutella mixture, double cream takes this liqueur to the next level of deliciousness. Plus, it balances out the sweetness of Nutella perfectly, creating a harmonious blend of flavours that’ll have you coming back for more.

Now, for those looking for dairy-free options, fear not! There are fantastic substitutes available that still deliver that creamy goodness. Think coconut milk for a creamy texture, almond or oat milk for a smooth and more runny finish, or even cashew milk for a nutty touch. With these dairy-free swaps, everyone can enjoy the indulgence of Nutellino without any dairy-related worries.

  • Diet: Gluten Free

Delight in the luxurious taste of homemade Nutella liqueur—a velvety blend of creamy Nutella, silky milk, rich cream, and a hint of pure alcohol. Perfect for sipping or adding a touch of indulgence to desserts and drinks.

Units Scale
  • 300 grams of Nutella
  • 350 grams of whole milk
  • 300 grams of heavy cream
  • 60 grams of sugar
  • 125 grams of pure alcohol at 95°

  1. In a large saucepan, combine the whole milk, heavy cream, sugar, and Nutella.
  2. Use a whisk to vigorously mix the ingredients until smooth and free of lumps.
  3. Place the saucepan over low heat and gently warm the mixture.
  4. Stir continuously until the mixture is warm, but not boiling, and the Nutella is completely melted.
  5. Once the mixture is heated through and the Nutella is melted, remove the saucepan from the heat.
  6. Allow the mixture to cool completely to room temperature, stirring occasionally to prevent a film from forming on the surface.
  7. Once the mixture has cooled, add the pure alcohol at 95°.
  8. Stir well to ensure the alcohol is evenly incorporated into the mixture.
  9. Transfer the liqueur into clean glass bottles, ensuring they are tightly sealed.
  10. Allow the liqueur to chill in the refrigerator for at least 10 minutes before serving.
  11. Let the Nutella liqueur rest in the refrigerator for at least 7 days before consuming.
  12. Before serving, give the bottle a gentle shake to ensure the ingredients are well mixed.

If pure alcohol is unavailable, vodka or other spirits can be used as substitutes. Refer to the blog section on core ingredients for recommended substitutions and their corresponding measurements.

Store the Nutella liqueur in the refrigerator for up to 3 months.

Avoid freezing it, as this may affect its texture and flavour.

Before serving, give the bottle a good shake to ensure all the ingredients are well mixed.

For an even more indulgent experience, allow the liqueur to rest for 20-30 days before enjoying it. This will allow the creamy, Nutella, and milk flavours to meld together, creating a smooth and harmonious blend.

For added depth and aroma, consider adding a 20 grams of Grand Marnier.

To elevate the presentation of your Nutella liqueur, dip the rim of the shot glass into the jar of Nutella before pouring the liqueur. This adds a delightful touch of indulgence and enhances the overall experience for your guests.

Occasionally, the liqueur may solidify when stored in the fridge. To remedy this, simply submerge the bottle in hot water for a few minutes to soften the liqueur. Once softened, give it a good shake to ensure all ingredients are thoroughly mixed before serving.

Can I use a different type of alcohol instead of grain alcohol?

Certainly! When making homemade Nutella liqueur, you can explore various alternatives to grain alcohol based on your preferences and availability. While grain alcohol, known for its high alcohol content, is commonly used in liqueur recipes, there are several substitutes you can consider.

One option is to use vodka, which is a popular choice due to its neutral flavour and smooth finish. Alternatively, you might opt for rum, which can impart a hint of sweetness and depth to the liqueur. Whiskey, with its robust flavour profile, can also be used to add complexity to the final product.

Brandy is another excellent alternative, offering a rich and warming character that complements the sweetness of the Nutella. Additionally, you could experiment with flavoured liqueurs or spirits, such as hazelnut liqueur or chocolate liqueur, to enhance the Nutella’s signature taste.

Ultimately, the choice of alcohol is subjective and depends on your taste preferences and desired outcome. Feel free to explore different options and tailor the recipe to create a homemade Nutella liqueur that suits your individual palate.

How long does homemade Nutella liqueur last?

Homemade Nutella liqueur can typically last for several  months when stored properly in a tightly sealed container, such as a glass bottle or jar. This helps prevent oxidation and maintains the integrity of the liqueur over time. It’s best to store it in the refrigerator, where it can maintain its quality and flavour for up to about 3 months. However, it’s important to avoid storing it in the freezer, as this can affect the texture and taste of the liqueur. Additionally, it’s a good idea to periodically check the liqueur for any signs of spoilage, such as changes in colour, consistency, or aroma. If you notice any unusual or off-putting characteristics, it may be best to discard the liqueur and make a fresh batch.

Can I adjust the sweetness of the liqueur to my taste?

Absolutely! Adjusting the sweetness of the liqueur to your taste is entirely possible when making homemade Nutella liqueur. Since sweetness preferences vary from person to person, having the flexibility to tailor the sweetness level ensures you create a liqueur that perfectly suits your palate.

To adjust the sweetness, you can simply vary the amount of sweetening agents used in the recipe. For instance, if you prefer a sweeter liqueur, you can increase the amount of chocolate hazelnut spread or add additional sweeteners such as sugar or honey. On the other hand, if you prefer a less sweet liqueur, you can reduce the amount of sweetening agents or opt for a sugar-free alternative.

Experimenting with different ratios allows you to find the perfect balance of sweetness that aligns with your taste preferences. Remember to taste the liqueur as you go along and adjust accordingly until you achieve your desired level of sweetness. With a bit of experimentation, you can create a homemade Nutella liqueur that’s tailor-made to delight your taste buds.

Are there any dairy-free alternatives to heavy cream?

Yes, there are several dairy-free alternatives to heavy cream that you can use when making homemade Nutella liqueur. These alternatives are perfect for individuals who are lactose intolerant or following a vegan diet. Some popular options include:

  1. Coconut Cream: Coconut cream is a rich and creamy alternative to heavy cream that adds a subtle coconut flavour to the liqueur. It has a similar consistency to heavy cream and can be used in equal proportions.

  2. Almond Milk: Almond milk is a lighter option that adds a hint of nuttiness to the liqueur. While it may not be as creamy as heavy cream, it can still contribute to the texture and flavour of the final product.

  3. Cashew Cream: Cashew cream is made by blending soaked cashews with water until smooth and creamy. It has a neutral flavour and silky texture, making it an excellent substitute for heavy cream in liqueur recipes.

  4. Oat Milk: Oat milk is another dairy-free alternative that offers a creamy texture and mild flavour. It can be used in place of heavy cream in equal proportions, adding a subtle sweetness to the liqueur.

Experiment with different options to find the one that best suits your needs and enhances the overall flavour profile of your liqueur.

Can I substitute Nutella with another chocolate hazelnut spread?

Certainly! You can substitute Nutella with another chocolate hazelnut spread when making homemade Nutella liqueur. While Nutella is a popular choice due to its distinctive flavour and creamy consistency, there are many other chocolate hazelnut spreads available on the market that can be used as alternatives.

When selecting a substitute, look for a chocolate hazelnut spread that has a similar texture and sweetness level to Nutella. Some brands may have slightly different flavours or consistencies, so it’s essential to choose one that complements the overall taste profile of the liqueur you’re making.

Ensure to taste the chocolate hazelnut spread before using it in the recipe to gauge its sweetness and flavour intensity. You may need to adjust the amount of sweeteners or other ingredients in the liqueur recipe to achieve the desired taste.

Is homemade Nutella liqueur suitable for vegan diets?

Homemade Nutella liqueur can be suitable for vegan diets depending on the ingredients used in the recipe. While traditional Nutella contains dairy products such as milk and whey, there are vegan-friendly alternatives available that replicate the creamy texture and rich flavour of Nutella without using animal-derived ingredients.

When making Nutella liqueur for a vegan diet, it’s essential to use dairy-free alternatives for ingredients such as heavy cream or chocolate hazelnut spread. Opting for coconut cream, almond milk, or other plant-based substitutes ensures that your liqueur remains entirely vegan-friendly.

By carefully selecting vegan-friendly ingredients and following a plant-based recipe, you can create a delicious homemade Nutella liqueur that aligns with vegan dietary principles. Always double-check the ingredients list and ensure that all components of the liqueur are free from animal products to make it suitable for vegans to enjoy.
